Halloween’s over, but I saw this trailer. (It plays as soon as site loads.) ‘8 Films to Die For’ from After Dark films, is a series of eight horror films deemed ‘too unfit’ for release that will be shown Nov. 17-19th, in 500 theatres/35 cities on only one weekend.
This may seem like new packaging for an old product, but it is a twist on the typical megaginormousplex showing eight different movies and genres. Perhaps it’s also a new way to build interest for the inevitable DVD release for each title. DVD pre-release showing in reverse, or DVDPRSR for acronymists out there. (It’s not a word, but it will be. Trust me.)
While it may not necessarily be groundbreaking strategy from the movie biz, compared to the usual fare they’ve been serving up using traditional promotion methods (SoaP not included), it’s an interesting step. On the other hand, is this too little, too late for gimmicks like this? Netflix, and/or the inevitable straight-to-your-plasma-digital-download the day the movie’s released might have a lot to say about that.
Only thing I’d alter a little:
A Miss Horrorfest promotion on YouTube that goes along with it. Seems slickly made which obviously came from the studio. Not to mention, cutting your audience in half by appealing only to guys? Horror movies, even bad ones, are date movies. Thanks on the tip from MaryAnne, one of the finalists who shows people how to vote on all of them once there. (Something people had trouble with when first entering the site.)
But, why not also have a promotion by viewers that speaks to the dating thing. “Tell us Your Dating Horror Stories” uploaded on YT to be voted on, then tie in with the show Blind Date. Doubt there’d be any shortage of material either: “Dude, all she did was talk about her stuffed animal collection the whole time.”

Hey, saw your mention of Horrorfest and the Miss Horrorfest contest... I hope you're enjoying it, us 4 ladies put in a ton of hard work. I think it will be a breath of fresh air for women like ourselves who enjoy horror.
Let mek now if you have any questions,
+MaryAnne, 1 of the 4 Horrofest finalists
Hey maryanne, looks like a lot went into it. Good luck on the contest btw. Since I’m into horror films, I think the whole festival/contest thing is a good idea.
From my POV, it's gotta be about horror fans enjoying the movies as much as anything else also. Contest are cool. I've been involved in many kinds of promotions like that on the agency side, so I know where they're comin from.
Just to be clear, I'm not putting you or the others down in the actual contest. This is just the kind of stuff I would bring up in the past when running a promo like this. Which would be to consider making sure the studio includes as wide an audience as possible, including couples.
(Also, it's good you added the clip on how to vote for finalists. It wasn’t that clear originally.)
