Scamp has a Nike ad featuring England’s rugby team prior to Saturday’s drubbing at the hands of South Africa. Regardless, it seems way more nationalistic than anything we’d do here for the Dream Team. Usually, you’d see a spread in ESPN of the team in some dark studio shot, relying on their star power as the draw. As metaphors go, this is powerful though. So why don’t we do more stuff like this here? Certainly with the NBA, NFL and MLB we can claim some sort of dominant posture over the rest of the world. Maybe though the rest of the world does ‘epic’ more than we do because they worry less about public opinion. Are there other issues at work here between England and the rest of Europe? Do I have too much free time to be reading into things like this? Probably.
(And for the UK contingent reading this, I feel for your ‘sporting autopsy,’ having suffered the national embarrassment of watching our aforementioned Dream Team sleep through the 2004 Summer Olympics.)
