Hey, let’s do that mobile marketing thing.

We could do cool ringtones and have people upload pics! Seems this is generally what passes for a brand’s attempt at mobile marketing these days. Two recent things I saw illustrate the lack of inventiveness point further. On Twitter, they have a pretty cool waste of time feature called Blocks where you can see an isometric vector graphic of the followers in your network. But Razr just throws a product shot on the page with a logo, which kind of matches the look of the page, but you’re left wondering, is that it? (Okay, I get it: cell phone brand + Twitter the texting service.) Go further though. Any brand doing what they did eventually just becomes more white noise.

Nokia did with its Trends Lab experiment though, via brandsbandsfans. (Yeah, anything with the word ‘trend’ in the title scares me too, but this site looks pretty good.) It pushes the idea of group messaging and experimenting with the tech a lot better than Razr’s efforts. You can be part of a group using cell phones for fashion projects and such or join live band events. Definitely two brands with different approaches.
