Mark Cuban’s Landmark theatres have partnered with Samsung to help push it into SONY territory. From content player to content maker. As part of the deal, they launched blueseat.com to promote independent film. There’s also a promo involving the best seats in the house–sit in the blue ones and good stuff will happen. One point in the Variety piece questions whether anything can be considered ‘independent’ if it’s getting backing like this from major brands. True, but considering the days of El Mariachi’s $7,000 budget are long gone, is anything really independent anymore? (And even that was a joke when the real costs to distribute it nationally were factored in.) But now, so-called indie films routinely show up at Sundance with 10 stars already attached. Stars trying to regain their career cred because they did one too many Cute Puppies sequels. Studios fight over who’s gonna sign the director before the press even screens the flicks. Indie? Good luck.
Maybe you’ll find something on YouTube.
