At least that’s what Radiohead is saying with their recent move: giving away their new CD for free via website download. (Go here to register for the October 1oth release date.) Looks like Prince wasn’t the only one with record company issues. Technically, it’s not free though. Fans do have to pay what they think is fair. Most will think free is fair, let’s face it. It’s cool that those acts would do that for fans though. It’s the inverse of current MySpace mindset where thousand’s of unknown bands give away their tunes and videos there and on YouTube. Live music in clubs is still strong, but now these sites offer another way for an up and coming act to get noticed. Leading to: a big record deal where one day they can say fuck it, and give their music away–for free.

Likewise, and seeing as I'm thinking of purchasing online and tangible versions of the album, I'm all for it. After all, most times artists don't see many royalties from cd sales.
