When you de-synch it, the podcast option goes away. (iTunes v 7.5 on an iPod that's about a year old.) And it may have been that way on the earliest version, but as I recall, I don’t think it let you drag and drop any single file onto the iPod. I think in their haste to worry about DRM, they put too many limits in place.
