Ghost bikes are everywhere.
In New York and other cities around the world, there’s a unique tribute to people who were killed on their bikes by drivers. After a fatality, The Street Memorial Project takes a bike, paints it white and leaves it at the scene along with info on what happened. The message is intended to remind people that bikes are everywhere. That’s not to say there aren’t those riders who are just plain reckless. In the past two months I’ve almost been clipped twice by bike messengers weaving in and out, one of which was my fault for not looking, and watched a third ditch right in front of me to avoid getting taken out by a bus. (This after he tried to take a hard right at full speed in the rain). My experiences notwithstanding, the pictures serve as a stark reminder that the real recklessness is often behind the wheel.
