Guess Kennedy never got the email on the name change?

I have a weekend riff planned on the recent rebranding madness sweeping the nation, but I caught this local KFC knock-off yesterday and felt like it fit in somehow. I know they’re a tri-state chain, but this one takes it further with a brilliant use of the red and white color scheme! Imitation, flattery? Check! Why, it’s almost as good as the original. Almost.

We had one in the neighborhood for a while. Not really a spin off of the Kentucky Fried Chicken, but more a variant of the Crown Fried Chicken you see in many urban areas. Usually the same red awning and black and white tile interior augmented by an ample helping of bulletproof glass. There's another chain that goes by Lincoln Fried Chicken that copies the same model. All the menus even look the same.

The biggest difference between all and KFC, though, is the chicken. Crown, Kennedy and Lincoln all put KFC to shame. I have yet to meet anyone from the whitest suburban kid I know to those of my neighbors raised on home-cooked soul food who didn't love that place. The day it closed (under mysterious circumstance) was one of the saddest in neighborhood history.
