To be fair there, I think comparing AG to the others is apples and oranges. I signed up with AG just because it wasn’t another FB filled with college students hawking their friend’s AWESOME!!!!! band video.
Which is what I think is the problem with the FBs and such: they all try and create a simple generic user experience based on community, which is fine, but don’t overthink thinks with proprietary applications-Wall/Super Wall/Big Bad Wall etc., in an attempt to make you stand out from the others.
People wanna go somewhere and hang out. Don’t mess with that, you know? Keep it simple.
People also have too many choices in general, so it’s harder I think to build community in one place when their media choices are so fragmented now. (Which is part of the reason I can’t get to all these things I signed up for.)
Do you get the feeling it's mostly the same people with different personalities? It's time for all this proliferation to consolidate. Past time, I think. I'm starting to worry there's not enough personal information left to be mined.

They're all dying. And somehow, there are still VC idiots out there who can be talked into investing in ONE MORE.
"This is gonna be just like MySpace or Facebook."
A good example of one in trouble, with no offense toward Mr. Hall; but AdGabber is not exactly hopping these days.

Not enough time–or too many choices.
;-p
You're right - work-related networking is much different than plain old hanging out, so let's call it oranges to tangerines.
At any rate, nice Song Remains the Same reference there with the image.
