How Toyota caught up?

By building cars and trucks people want? Maybe. Could also be a little more simple than that. Doesn’t hurt to steal appropriate liberate the blue collar vibe of your competition in order to create confusion in consumers’ minds.

Ford Trucks are built Ford Tough. Chevy's are like a rock. GM is built with some sort of self-important grade. Etc. Isn't it just part of the truck category to position oneself as a rugged heap of metal? The confusion started long before Toyota rolled on the scene.

To the American worker that needs a truck for his job, there's no question. The Ford F-150 has been the top-selling truck in America for 31 years.

Oh, and the term that such individuals use to describe Toyota & Honda trucks? "Coffee shop trucks." Because, according to them, the owners park them at coffee shops while the Ford owners are out working in theirs.

True anecdote from a contractor in South Carolina.
