Oh, those American Humanists. First we had bus love, now this ad. See, I get humanism:
“Humanism is a progressive philosophy of life that, without theism and other supernatural beliefs, affirms our ability and responsibility to lead ethical lives of personal fulfillment that aspire to the greater good of humanity.”
The agenda there is based on their desire to keep religion from being shoved down the throats of everyone, either in schools, public places or elsewhere. Fair enough for some I suppose, but why not just say “We don’t believe in God” and be done with it? I could at least respect that.
(*Cue nervous lawyer telling the writer “Don’t mention God.”)
But to now say that Obama won in spite of any religious beliefs is disingenuous. Faith was pretty much on display throughout the entire campaign, either at church services he attended or in his debate answers, and certainly back to his earlier childhood years in Catholic school as well as his experiences with the Islamic religion.
I appreciate piggybacking an agenda on the back of someone else’s success, because well, nobody else would know about you otherwise. (Part of me wants to say STFU because all anyone has to do is just ignore something they don’t like. However, we are in the business of getting attention.)
Obama though would be the first one to say faith played a major role in not only developing his sense of family values, but in also getting him to where he is today. Does the AHA really believe he would’ve gotten that far had his messaging adopted areligious tones?
Not even close, because if he had, we’d instead be looking at a congratulatory ad exploiting his coming in second.
(Tip to Zeke.)
