This is a shot from an unfinished development down in North Carolina. Hal from Goodtree and Co. took it, and it reminded me of the ongoing Junkin’ Report series that Aaron Draplin does, finding bits of retro American design at weekend garage sales. Basically Aaron shoots America the way it was and Hal’s shot just hit me as the American dream that fell short. Which then reminded me of a story I heard about abandoned residential developments in Las Vegas that have nothing but wild dogs running through deserted neighborhoods. (While not the area I heard about, these shots document more of the same.) I’m guessing there are a lot more of those stories yet to be shot on the way through a Hopeful recession.
(As I started to write this quick post—they always start out as “quick” but never are—I was also trying to remember the series of images profiling the empty offices of bankrupt American businesses, found here. Looking at the main welcome screen, I recognized four categories of work there were all different things I’ve blogged at one time or another. Don’t know why I zoned to this point but in a killer DOH! moment, I finally put 2+2 together and realized it was all shot by Phillip Toledano.)
