Rock on, business rock stars.
Name it, and I’m pretty sure you can pick up lessons on business from any walk of life: Toll booth operators. Tour de France winners. Prostitutes. Key learnings like: 1) Do what you love, (or are qualified to do), 2) Do it well, 3) Get paid for it, 4) Take care of your money, and 5) Don’t treat customers or co-workers like shit.
Add Rock Stars™ to the list of institutions of higher learning for corporate America. I haven’t read the two books featured in this article, and I likely won’t, but I imagine the draw with this type of approach is the audience that would wonder how endless groupies, sleeping until noon and music videos could apply to their office.
I’m guessing it never would.
Musicians, artists or athletes are born with a certain something that others aren’t. That’s why they’re musicians... artists... athletes. Certain principles from each walk of life may apply, but the core of a musician is fundamentally different than an accountant, and no book will reconcile the two. (Look at me with the CPA joke!) I’m pretty sure Slash hasn’t read too much Tom Peters, (Gene Simmons likely has), but I have to think he’s like every other musician or artist when it comes to taking care of the business side of the art:
1) Do what you love (or are qualified to do), 2) Do it well, 3) Get paid for it, 4) Take care of your money, and 5) Don’t treat customers or co-workers like shit.
