Collect all nine!

Denis Leary joked once that you could have a cigarette brand called Tumors with a giant skull and crossbones and people would still smoke. Guess we’ll see. Joining Canada and its cigarette package warning fun, the FDA will now require similar graphic labels for U.S. tobacco companies. Final designs will be chosen by June 22, 2011, and take effect 15 months later on packages and in ads.

“The Tobacco Control Act requires that the nine graphic health warnings appear on the upper portion of the front and rear panels of each cigarette package and comprise at least the top 50 percent of these panels.”

Which means a big-ass graphic. Until then, light ’em if ya got ’em, free from sexy stitch imagery. They’re currently choosing nine out of 36 possible versions. Pick your favorite now!

My opinion is that it would take an eternity to think up a label that would encourage smokers to stop smoking. However, there is one way to prevent young people from lighting their first cigarette and that is to constantly push up its price.
