NOH8 or It Gets Better – you decide.

At the risk of coming off like a bully for having more issues with the It Gets Better campaign, here goes. NOH8, the protest started in response to the passing of Proposition 8, now jumps into the fray here. The clip features a fair mount of celebs talking about bullying of LGBT teens, not a bad thing in and of itself. Putting aside my issue of only making this a LGBT problem, from a branding POV, NOH8 seems like it adds another rallying cry into a mix that doesn’t need two different messages. Maybe organizers felt they needed something catchy that flowed better and fit nicely on an avatar, or even looks good on some merch? It comes off as confusing. Too bad these kids won’t be seeing it.

The NOH8 campaign has actually been around for a few years now (I hate that I know this, but Perez Hilton did photo shoots with a few other celebrities: you can see picture of them wearing t-shirts with the logo and duct tape over their mouths) and appears to be jumping onto the "It Gets Better" bandwagon, rather than the other way around. NOH8 (if I remember correctly) was started by California celebrities in an effort to get Prop 8 voted down (thus the logo) and they're joining Dan Savage's grassroots and crowdsourced message war. Just FYI.

Thanks Caitlín. I amended things to reflect that. It’s funny, but I had associated the *No on 8* messages at the time to be strictly a Prop 8 deal. Now that I see it here, it feels like they’re diluting their own message by joining in. It’s a question of which is the lead message?
