BILLY MAYS HERE WITH ANOTHER FANTASTIC REALITY SHOW!

Aka, As Screamed On TV. Wasn’t sure what to expect with Pitchmen starring Billy Mays and Anthony Sullivan. After seeing two episodes, it’s safe to say it won’t threaten for best ad show ever, but there’s enough to maintain interest for anyone in or out of the business. It’s typical reality show fare except for surprisingly, half the forced drama. Probably because it’s part doc too.

The premise is that they screen several ideas from inventors and pick two to promote from there, create infomercials, and then wait for the results. You know it’s a hit when they have people come back to the office to hear the results versus them calling someone to say it tanked. If you’re a junkie for this stuff, you get to see a lot of what goes into infomercials and realize, that like QVC, Mays knows his shit with regards to what works and doesn’t on TV. They monitor everything.

In addition, you get a look at him and Sullivan in quieter moments. (If, Mays has any—DAMN that guy’s loud.) Oh, and cue jet black hair. Wonder how many PAs are off-camera waiting with Sharpies to touch that stuff up. Most interesting stuff happens though when the chosen few start making changes to the way Mays and Sullivan should pitch their stuff. It becomes a role-reversal as inventor becomes client and the pitchmen become the agency having to follow orders.

See, I get it’s your baby and all, and maybe you’ve sunk your life savings into the project, but when two guys who sell 250 million products to your none say changing one word equals an additional half-million in sales, you STFU. (Supposedly, one of the inventors had already made money prior to being selected, so part about his dreams coming true rings false, but I’m watching more for the behind the scenes crap that goes on.)

Will it last beyond its scheduled run of 13 episodes? Don’t know. If I knew the answer to that, I’d be able to tell if my sideways pizza carrier will be a hit or not. No, wait, watch. Here’s what it does. First, you take hot pizza...

“Let’s go to the starecam.”

Laugh track kills it but this clip from the UK show Big Train is still a funny parody of typical UK soccer football matches.

Yo Spock, what up?

Star Trek Karaoke is just one of the really funny-ass G4TV promos for Star Trek 2.0 by 72andSunny and help from Rogue Creative. I know they’ve been out for some time but I just came across them. They put a new spin on the franchise living longer and prospering more than any other I know. Love everything about these: from the stop motion work to the writing to the way they incorporate the logo. Charly Murphy as the voice of Spock is an inspired choice too. If you watch any of the current crop of animated shows, it’s obvious things have come a LONG way since Harryhausen. Check out other clips too: Cribs, Poolsid , Coffee House and a Cribs Director’s Cut.

America’s greatest one-line actor.

“Pound for pound, there’s nobody better.”
The video evidence my friend, is painfully clear.”
“Need a punchline to the drama?”
“He’s your man.”
“Except for possibly this guy.”
“We’ll see – won’t we.”

Die SNL, die.

Not much else to do Saturday night except check out how spectacularly unfunny the show is now. I think the Logan’s Run law should be invoked in this case: all shows over 30 years old should just be eliminated in a circular lightshow of death.

E! Starveillance.

Team America meets Celebrity Death Match. Caught a new animated show on E! with most of the celebrity freaks I rant about here. Try and catch clips of episode with The Olson Twins looking for an apartment in NYC or the K-Fed and Mrs. K-Fed interview on the E! website.

The Naked Cowbo..., er, Trucker & T-Bones Show.

Notice a theme to this week’s posts Logo freaks? Rhymes with ‘rip-off’ homage. Didn’t plan it, just going with the flow. Maybe the real Kramer and the real Naked Cowboy, (a.k.a. Robert John Burck), can get together and cry in their beers. I feel bad for the guy. Comes to NY trying to make it big. Develops a little schtick, does the ‘stand outside and freeze yer nuts off’ routine for how many years?

Now, Comedy Central comes out with a new show called The Naked Trucker & T-Bones Show with a character that sure looks an awful like it was based on him. Trailer looks funny enough, and it’s obvious the redneck humor wave still has some riding left. (If it wasn’t for Jeff Foxworthy, the Lenny Bruce of redneck comedy, just where would the likes of Ricky Bobby ever be?) As for Robert, y’all can expect some royalty checks comin’ your way any day now, ya hear? (That’s my bad Southern phonetical accent coming out in honor of USA and Monk.)

Yo Monk, U down wit’ O.C.D.?

That’s not my phonetical mangling by the way, that’s the USA Network combining two of my favorite things: street slang mixed with chat shorthand wrapped up in a Naughty By Nature rip-off homage. (Man, sure am using that phrase a lot this week.) Anyway, check out the rest of the lyrics and the actual song here. Now, I loved this show when it first came out. Brilliant writing, quirky characters and Tony Shalhoub with an understated lead performance. Then it devolved into Murder He Wrote with Latex Gloves to Avoid Germs. And now, after Stilwell Angel’s mom left the cast, it’s just a slapstick mess of a sitcom that’s not only jumped, but jumped and left the building. Word.

Wonder Showzen.

Elmo’s dead. Ok, now you’re ready. If you grew up with Sesame Street or any Saturday morning cartoons, this David Lynch meets Pee-wee’s playhouse is a reincarnation of those Saturday mornings past. Albeit a more sick, twisted, perverted and funny-ass past. Check it out on MTV2 here and also YouTube. As the warning says, this show is definitely not for real kids.

Best show on TV returns tonight.

Is it as important as melting polar ice caps? Nope. But, if you like my wise-ass sense of humor, Denis Leary has more where that came from. Rescue Me is the best show out there right now. Forget Lost. Forget House. Forget 24. FX channel. 10 pm tonight ad bitches.
